LG's giant 42.5" monitor is a productivity monster, squeezes four screens on one display

LG's latest monitor offers users the ability to run up to four separate screens on its massive 42.5-inch display. According to a press release announcing the monitor, it's the largest 4K screen offered by the company, and each screen can be up to 21.3 inches tall.

The new monitor's official name is 43UD79-B, and it will be available in Japan starting on May 19, 2017, the release said. The monitor will sell for 83,000 yen, or roughly $740 USD.

The monitor is compatible with both picture-in-picture (PIP) and picture-by-picture (PBP) functions.

In terms of specs, the monitor has four HDMI ports—two 4K ports that are 60Hz compatible and two 4K ports that are 30Hz compatible. It also has a DisplayPort input, a USB Type-C port, an RS-232C port, and two USB 3.0 ports as well, the release said.

In the settings, where users can also control brightness and contrast, users can make split screen presets that correspond with a given software or application. So, when that software is opened, the corresponding picture mode is automatically set. This could seriously reduce the frustration involved with changing picture settings for each given application that a user is working in.

A blue light reduction mode and a flicker safe feature aim to reduce eye strain, while AMD FreeSync technology is used to limit screen stuttering and makes for a smoother display. In addition to FreeSync, the LG monitor also provides a dynamic action sync (DAS) mode for reducing lag and a black stabilizer to make darker portions of the screen easier to see.

Many of the features on the new 43UD79-B monitor will appeal to gamers, and that segment is specifically pointed out by LG in its press release. However, the potential for multiple screens could have a huge draw for professionals working in finance and data science, for example, who often need easy access to multiple screens at one time. LG also said in its release that the monitor is recommended for professionals in "various fields" and would make a good tool for multitasking.
